One of the UK's largest water companies, operating a sewer network spanning nearly 40,000 km, servicing 65,000 maintenance calls annually through a reactive maintenance partner.
The challenge
Heavy rainfall causes field technician demand to surge 3–4 times normal workload levels, straining a fixed-size workforce and jeopardising service level commitments. Climate change is intensifying these peaks, creating significant cost pressures.
Our approach
RGA analysed 8 years of operational demand data alongside weather information to develop a regression model predicting work demand from precipitation forecasts, at water-company, daily, weekly, monthly, and community-level resolution. This supported a predictive resourcing model whereby base level resource was right-sized for the year and temporary resource peaking was achieved through a call-off commercial model.
